Project Structure Generator on Labs

As with many labs projects they start with a simple idea as a seed and germinate into deceptively interesting creations. Project Structural Generator is one of those projects. Started with two simple ideas, the first was someone wanting to learn new skills by picking up C# and the other was asking how one could quickly create structural system to support architectural masses. A few months later the project was presented to a few development managers who encouraged more work. They presented it to Product Managers who continued to find it even more interesting and presented it to Business Leaders who agreed that it was valuable for our customers to play with. Long story short, what started as a small pet project to learn and explore is now on Autodesk Labs.

So at this point you are probably asking what is it. Well at its simplest form, it is a tool that can be used at the conceptual design stage to take Revit masses and build a structural system of columns, walls, floors, beams, braces and footings to support the mass. The resulting Revit structure can be analyzed in Robot Structural Analysis, Project Storm or any other analysis application with a link to Revit. This enables Autodesk Revit Structure and Autodesk Revit Architecture users to gain insight into the structural system that would best suite the architectural model. They can quickly look at a multitude of structural configurations and generate them very quickly. So with Project Structure Generator, structural engineers and architects, from the earliest stages, can quickly create and visualize a physical and analytical model of a structure based on the massing model.

Project Structure Generator enables structural engineers and architects to:

• Automatically create and visualize a physical model of the structure with mass objects.
• Generate variants of the physical and analytical model with structural systems.
• Predict volume and weight of structural materials used.
• Generate the structural model in Revit Structure or Revit Architecture.
• Perform the analysis of the model using Project Storm a cloud based technology preview on Autodesk Labs that allows static analysis to be performed or to Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis Professional software.

What does Project Structure Generator means for the industry?

Project Structure Generator gives added value, in the early stages of design, not only independently for architects and structural engineers, but also enables them to cooperate closely. Due to the parametric approach of the tool, common data format and quick model regeneration, it is possible to create different variants of architectural models and verify them from a structural point of view. It is a low cost way to create a structural model collaboratively between the architect and structural engineer.  This can significantly reduces the risk of important changes in the model in the later phases of design.
